The Mont Saint-Michel's library
The Avranches Scriptorial, home to the manuscripts of Mont Saint-Michel, offers visitors a journey through the history of these documents.
In the heart of the town, in a resolutely contemporary site, the Scriptorial presents the precious manuscripts from the abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, entrusted to the town of Avranches since the Revolution.
With parchment coloured walls, light filtering through the openings resembling medieval loopholes, a gently sloping design climbs up to the high point of the visit: the Treasure and its manuscripts.

The journey begins with an introduction to the history of Avranches, evoking the links which bind the town to Mont-Saint-Michel.

Further on, the visitor discovers the textures of the manuscripts, the materials, the colours of the inks and the shapes used by medieval copyists, before moving on to a presentation of the ancient texts, the glimmering illuminations and the translations. Multimedia terminals, objects taken direct from some of the manuscripts and documentary films line the way and offer visitors the chance to explore the subject in more depth, in a fun and interactive way.
Some surprises, products of high-tech developments, also await visitors.
The visit continues with a presentation of books today, which makes reference to the printing-press revolution and opens up to the theme of computer-aided writing.
Temporary exhibitions, seminars and conferences will be held regularly at the Scriptorial.
