The library was famed for its collection and it has even been suggested that it was one of the richest in the Western world.

 

Despite the absence of a medieval inventory, it would appear that, as for the majority of Norman libraries, it is likely to have contained between 700 and 800 volumes. In October 1639, Dom Le Michel catalogues only 280 manuscripts: fires, damp and building collapses considerably reduced the collection.
